Since 1844 there has always been a seminary for the education and formation of the local clergy even though, for a variety of reasons locations had to be changed. Those locations include Adwa, Guol'a, Alitena, Kudahanay and Adigrat. The actual Major Seminary in Adigrat was occupied on 11th October 1970 as a distinct entity from the Minor Seminary. The affiliation of the Major Seminary, Adigrat, to the Pontifica Universitas Urbaniana of Rome was ratified by the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education on 12th October 1983. On completion of the full course the successful students obtain the University degree of "Baccalaureatus in Sacred Theology." In addition to the students of the Eparchy of Adigrat there are also seminarians of the Salesians of Don Bosco and Missionaries of Africa attending the lectures in the Major Seminary
